The Shape of an Idea
From the outside looking in, it might have appeared sudden. But the idea that would become InfiniSet wasn't a flash of inspiration. It was the culmination of years of deep technical exploration, personal reinvention, and relentless creative experimentation.
Matt Guertin had long been the kind of person who could take on anything and make it work — whether that meant fixing broken lighting rigs, building immersive LED installations from scratch, or turning a sketchy napkin concept into a fully functional interactive experience. He thrived in pressure, delivered in chaos, and treated every job like it was his own project — because in many ways, it always was. The fingerprints of his ingenuity had quietly made their way into projects all across the world, but this was different. This wasn't someone else's vision he was helping realize. This time, the idea was entirely his.
In early February 2021, that idea landed with a kind of force he couldn't ignore. In an instant, everything in his life — his attention, his energy, his time, his resources — pivoted entirely. This was it. This was the invention everyone had always told him he'd come up with eventually. And for the first time, there was no ambiguity about it.
The sheer scale of what it could become was undeniable. Revolutionary. Disruptive. The kind of idea that felt so obvious in hindsight that it was almost hard to believe no one had done it already. And most importantly: Guertin didn't just have the idea. He had the skill to build it himself.
There was no hesitation. He filed a provisional patent on March 19, 2021 — his first ever. He created a name that came to him just as quickly: InfiniSet. It was perfect. He trademarked it immediately.
This was more than a product. It was the sum of everything that had come before — years of unique experience across lighting, interactive design, live production, custom software, fabrication, virtual environments, and intuitive spatial engineering — all coalescing into a singular idea. The Mechanical Breakthrough
At the heart of InfiniSet is a deceptively simple mechanical concept that solves a problem the entire virtual production industry has struggled with: how do you create the illusion of a person walking through an infinite environment, while keeping them physically stationary on a stage?
The answer is a motorized treadmill mounted on a rotatable turntable. The treadmill belt moves forward, giving the person the sensation and visual appearance of walking. The turntable beneath it rotates, changing the direction of travel. And a virtual camera, synchronized in real time, rotates inversely — creating the illusion that the camera is orbiting around a person who is walking through an infinite world.

The Pancake Slip Ring
The key mechanical component that makes the entire system possible is a pancake slip ring — a flat, rotating electrical connector that allows continuous 360-degree rotation while maintaining power and data connections between the treadmill (which rotates) and the stationary base (which doesn't). Without it, cables would twist and break after a single revolution. The pancake slip ring enables unlimited, uninterrupted rotation — the foundation that makes everything else possible.
This isn't theoretical. Guertin sourced the components, designed the mounting system, and integrated the slip ring into a custom aluminum turntable that he fabricated by hand. The slip ring carries not only power for the treadmill motor, but data connections for sensors, tracking systems, and the real-time controller that synchronizes the entire assembly with the virtual camera.
